Medlab South, a division of Asia Pacific Healthcare Group, is the provider of pathology services to the patients of Nelson/Marlborough Hospital Clinicians, General Practitioners, Medical Specialists, and midwives by way of our long-term contract with the Nelson/Marlborough District Health Board.

The laboratory provides a full histology service, which also includes overseeing the Nelson/Marlborough mortuary. This is a permanent, full time position of 80 hours per fortnight.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic team player with a wealth of multi-disciplinary experience. As Head of Department, you will have overall responsibility for managing all operational activities of the Histology department to ensure a quality and efficient cost effective delivery of diagnostic services to our customers and patients.

You will work collaboratively with the Nelson/Marlborough regional laboratory manager, clinical pathologists, and other APHG managers to ensure the success of the company. The Head of Department position is expected to take around 20% of your time and the remaining time you will be working on the bench - so it really gives you the best of both worlds. On top of that, you get to live in a location that is sought after by many in New Zealand.

To be considered for this role you will need:

  • To be registered as a Scientist with the NZ Medical Science Council.
  • A current Annual Practicing Certificate
  • To hold relevant qualifications and/or experience in Histology
  • At least 3 years supervisory and/or staff management experience with proven ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • To be flexible in hours of work including availability to work weekends and shift/on call if required.
  • To have previous experience managing budgets and monitoring finances

You will be disciplined and self-motivated, with a positive approach to work; customer focused; possess effective interpersonal and time management skills; able to work independently, use initiative to solve problems and make decisions appropriately.

APHG offers support in management training to senior technical staff. In addition, there is a funded CPD program for laboratory scientists and a discretionary scholarship fund for approved educational projects.
